Mission Statement:
The purpose/mission of the Chapman Dance Film Club (CDFC) is to help students who are interested in the intersection of dance and film gain a working knowledge of all aspects of dance film production. One goal of the CDFC is for it’s members to produce dance films or video content for multimedia live dance performance. Club members may participate in any capacity on a film such as director, choreographer and/or dancer. Members may work alone or in collaboration to produce a film. Members will demonstrate support for one another by serving as a crew member on at least one member’s film.
Over the course of the academic year, members will learn the creative and technical components of dance film production including, but not limited to, conceiving a dance film concept, creating a storyboard, choreographing for the camera, cinematography and lighting basics, managing a film set and video editing. Members will work in collaboration to workshop each others’ ideas and offer feedback in each step of the process. In addition, members will receive mentorship from the Advisor as they work to bring their artistic vision to fruition.
At the end of the academic year, the members’ films will be presented at the Chapman Dance Film Festival—a festival organized and produced by the members and open to the public. In order to have a film screened in the festival, members must demonstrate their engagement with the educational information presented at meetings by submitting a storyboard and film draft for peer/advisor feedback.
Another goal of the CDFC is to provide an equitable experience for the members. No experience is required to become a member, other than the membership requirements outlined in our Constitution. Members are permitted to use mobile phones to record their project if they do not have access to a professional camera.
